Sunday, May 31, 2020 – Pentecost

Meditation:

7:37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

20:19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Letter O – The “Our Father” (The Lord’s Prayer):

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
~ Matthew 6:9-13

Deliver us from evil

Today’s verse is the last one in the Lord’s Prayer. It asks God to keep us safe from evil. The New Living Translation of the Bible says this verse as “Rescue us from the Evil One.”

That sounds scary. What is “evil”, or who is “the evil one?” It is whatever or whoever tries to pull us off God’s path. Whatever or whoever tries to tell us that God doesn’t love us, or we aren’t good enough for Him, or that God won’t help us when we ask.

Those are lies. The Bible tells us that God loves us all the time, no matter what we are doing or what is happening to us. And he always listens to our cry for help.

Look at the picture. See how the girl’s father is holding her hand and keeping her safe? As long as she doesn’t let go, he will protect her from danger. It’s the same with us. As long as we stay close to God, he will keep us safe from evil, no matter what.

Our Father, thank you that you are stronger than any evil thing that comes our way. Evil is scary, but you will keep us safe. Help us stay close to you always, so you can rescue us from anything that tries to pull us away. Amen.

And now, one last time, here is our video of the Lord’s Prayer. Let’s pray to God the way Jesus taught his disciples — and that includes us!

Prayer for our World:

Our prayer this week is for the Syria. Years of war have decimated its health-care system, and many people are struggling to find food during the COVID-19 shutdown. Pray for the people and the churches that are trying to help. Read more here: https://www.opendoorsca.org/featured-story/urgent-news-from-syria/

Scripture: The Holy Spirit Comes

2 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! 9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” 12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.

13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”

Peter Preaches to the Crowd
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on my servants—men and women alike—
and they will prophesy.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below—
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will become dark,
and the moon will turn blood red
before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved.’

6 这 声 音 一 响 , 众 人 都 来 聚 集 , 各 人 听 见 门 徒 用 众 人 的 乡 谈 说 话 , 就 甚 纳 闷 ;
