Join us to worship together, though apart, now that our Sunday services have moved online because of the COVID-19 virus.
Sunday, May 3
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Do you ever want something to happen? When you do, we say that it is “your will”. For example, it is my will that my garden be ready to plant in three weeks. Our Bible passage today teaches us to pray that God’s will, what God wants to happen, will happen.
How do we know what God wants? Look at the picture of the boy with his dad. His dad is teaching him to read the Bible. When we study the Bible, we learn what things God wants us to do, such as praying, and being thankful for what we have, and being kind to others.
But when we pray this line, we are praying for more than that. We are telling God that we want everything to happen on Earth the way he wants, and not necessarily the way we want. Because from up in heaven, God can see much better than we can what needs to happen. He knows the future, and he knows what we really need, which might be different from what we want right now.
It is not easy to pray for God’s will to be done, because we want some things very much and it can be hard to ask for what God wants instead. Jesus prayed this prayer before he died on the cross. He didn’t want to die like that, so it was very hard for him to pray it. But he knew that God’s way was best. And it was, because then God raised him to life again, and now we can be part of his kingdom. So this prayer tells God that like Jesus, we will trust him no matter what.
Our Father, thank you that you know everything that is good for us and for the world. Thank you, Jesus, for wanting what God wanted even when it was really hard. Teach us to want what you want more than anything else. Amen.
Here is the video we have been using. Can you sing the whole song by yourself yet?
Prayer for our World:
Here is the weekly prayer from CBM (Canadian Baptist Ministries), the Missions branch of our denomination. This week it comes from African field staff member Polisi Kvava: www.cbmin.org/prayerline/.
19 For God is pleased when, conscious of his will, you patiently endure unjust treatment. 20 Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.
21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.
22 He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone.
23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted,
nor threaten revenge when he suffered.
He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.
24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross
so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right.
By his wounds you are healed.
25 Once you were like sheep who wandered away.
But now you have turned to your Shepherd,
the Guardian of your souls.

The Table – written by Chris Tomlin/Ed Cash
May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~ Romans 15:5-6 (NLT)
