Sunday, May 24, 2020 – Ascension Sunday

Meditation:

Psalm 93 (NLT) ; 詩 篇 93 (CUVS)

1 The Lord is king! He is robed in majesty.
Indeed, the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength.
The world stands firm
and cannot be shaken.
2 Your throne, O Lord, has stood from time immemorial.
You yourself are from the everlasting past.
3 The floods have risen up, O Lord.
The floods have roared like thunder;
the floods have lifted their pounding waves.
4 But mightier than the violent raging of the seas,
mightier than the breakers on the shore—
the Lord above is mightier than these!
5 Your royal laws cannot be changed.
Your reign, O Lord, is holy forever and ever.

Children’s Time: Letter O – The “Our Father” (The Lord’s Prayer):

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation.
~ Matthew 6:9-13

Lead us not into temptation

So far in the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus has taught us to ask for the things we need for today and to forgive us when we do things we shouldn’t. In today’s verse, we ask God to keep us safe from temptation, or from wanting to do things we know we shouldn’t do.

You might be wondering why God would ever lead us to a place where we will be tempted to do something wrong. That is a very good question, especially since the Bible also says in James 1:13 that God NEVER tempts us to do what is wrong.

Remember that our Bible has been translated from another language, and as people learn more about how to read the ancient languages, the translations can change. The New Living Translation, a newer translation of the Bible that we use in our church, translates this verse as, “Don’t let us yield to temptation.” Another way of saying this is “Don’t let us give in to temptation.”   So in this prayer we are asking God to help us say “NO!” when we are tempted to do something wrong.

The boy in the picture looks like he is tempted to do something he shouldn’t.  What should he do? He should ask God to help him say no. God promises to answer this prayer. The Bible says that God will not allow a temptation to be more than we can stand, and when we are tempted, he will show us a way out. (1 Corinthians 10:13) So don’t be afraid. God is here to help.

Our Father, thank you that you always listen to our prayers, especially when we want to do something we know we shouldn’t. Help us say no to wrong things, and show us how to get away so we won’t be tempted any more. Thank you. Amen.

The video we have been using to sing our prayer to God doesn’t have this line of the prayer in it. So here is a different video instead.

Prayer for our World:

Our prayer this week is a Call and Response Lament, based on Psalm 113, from Tim and Kallie Hutton in Bolivia. You can read it here.

Scripture:

Acts 1:1-14 (NLT) ; 使 徒 行 傳 1:1-14 (CUVS)

In my first book[a] I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. 3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. 10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. 13 When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James). 14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
