Meditation:

Psalm 31 (NLT) ; 詩 篇 31 (CUVS)

1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame;
    deliver me in your righteousness.
Turn your ear to me,
    come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge,
    a strong fortress to save me.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,
    for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,
    for you are my refuge.
Into your hands I commit my spirit;
    deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

15 My times are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
16 Let your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.

因 为 你 是 我 的 岩 石 , 我 的 山 寨 ;

Children’s Time: Letter O – The “Our Father” (The Lord’s Prayer):

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
~ Matthew 6:9-11

Our Daily Pizza

So far we have looked at the first part of the Lord’s prayer, where we praise God and tell him that we want to do what he wants. This week we start the second part, where we ask God to help us with what we need. The first thing Jesus says we should ask for when we pray is “our daily bread”, which is another way of saying “the food we need for today.”

Jesus did not speak English, because when he was on Earth, the English language didn’t exist yet. He spoke a version of the Hebrew language called “Galilean Aramaic”. And it just so happens that the word for “bread” in his language was “PITHA”. Does this sound like any other word you know? (Hint: look at the picture.) Our word “pizza” comes from the word “pitha”. So Jesus would have taught his disciples to pray, “Give us this day our daily pizza — although they didn’t have pizza yet then either. So the next time you eat pizza, you can thank him for your daily pitha.

But we need lots of things in our lives besides bread or pizza. We need clothing and a place to get out of the rain and people to look after us. We also need things we can’t see, like courage and comfort and wisdom and love. When we pray this line of the Lord’s Prayer, we can ask God for all of these things as well: all the things we need for today.

We should remember that what we need might not be the same as what we want. It’s a good thing God knows the difference, because sometimes it’s hard for us to see that!

If we pray for the things we need for today, how often should we pray? Every day that we need something, which is every day! And if we pray every day, do we need to ask for what we need for a month? No. Jesus wants us to talk to God and trust him every day for what we need right then.

Our Father, thank you that you care so much about us that you want to give us what we need every day. Please give me ______________________ that I need today. Help us remember to pray every day about what we need, and help us trust you to give it to us. Thank you for pizzas too. Amen.

Here is the video we have been using. Can you sing the whole song by yourself yet?

Prayer for our World:

Here is the weekly prayer from CBM (Canadian Baptist Ministries), the Missions branch of our denomination. This week it comes from Lebanon field staff member Joe Bridi: www.cbmin.org/prayerline/.

Scripture:

Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.

You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the Scriptures say,

“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,
    chosen for great honor,
and anyone who trusts in him
    will never be disgraced.”

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has now become the cornerstone.”

And,

“He is the stone that makes people stumble,
    the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

10 “Once you had no identity as a people;
    now you are God’s people.
Once you received no mercy;
    now you have received God’s mercy.”

Benediction:

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.                                                                                                                              ~ Ephesians 3:20-21 (NLT)
