Opening Music

1st Scripture

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. 11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

我 每 逢 想 念 你 们 , 就 感 谢 我 的 神 ;

10 使 你 们 能 分 别 是 非 ( 或 作 : 喜 爱 那 美 好 的 事 ) , 作 诚 实 无 过 的 人 , 直 到 基 督 的 日 子 ;

Lighting the Candle of Peace

Reader 1:
Isaiah 40:3-5, NIV “A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’”

As we gather today, we claim the gift of peace that is in Christ Jesus.
We are mindful of the unrest that is all around us.
We hear about it globally – political fear, war, injustice.
We know about it locally – fear of job loss, sickness.
And we experience it personally – family conflict, difficult decisions, worry.

Into this darkness the light has come.
Into this anxiety, fear, and unrest came the gift of peace, Jesus Christ.
In the face of fear, we light a candle of peace…
(Light the candle in your Advent wreath)

May the light from this candle say to all that God’s peace is coming on earth as it already is in heaven. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” (Isaiah 52:7, NIV)

Friends, do not be afraid, do not worry, God’s peace has come! Let us reflect the gift of peace this Advent season.

2nd Scripture:

“Look! I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“But who will be able to endure it when he comes? Who will be able to stand and face him when he appears? For he will be like a blazing fire that refines metal, or like a strong soap that bleaches clothes. He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord. Then once more the Lord will accept the offerings brought to him by the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as he did in the past.

Prayer for our World

Our CBM prayer this week is from Yuanchuan Ye and Ming Gao, CBM Field Staff in Germany.

“Dear Father in heaven, we praise your holy name, your mercy, grace, and love. We thank you for your gentle leading in our life.

We pray for our ministry in Heidelberg, Germany. We hope that we can meet new people and share the gospel with them. It’s hard during the pandemic period but we trust in you. Please bless and use the Christmas worship that we are planning, to help more people to know Jesus.

I also pray for my family. Besides ministry, we must take care of two young children (2-year-old daughter Muling, and 8-month-old son Muyan) without a helper. My wife Ming and I sometimes feel very tired, lacking adequate energy. We need wisdom from you to plan our time and have patience with two children.

Lord, we believe that you will give us all we need. And we can only look upon you and entrust everything to you. Lastly, we ask for your blessing and favour for the greater CBM work in all the other countries. Be with our counterparts as they do your work. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”

Read the Soucy’s full prayer here. If you like, take time now to send your own praises, thanks and concerns to the Lord.

3rd Scripture

68 “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has visited and redeemed his people.
69 He has sent us a mighty Savior
from the royal line of his servant David,
70 just as he promised
through his holy prophets long ago.
71 Now we will be saved from our enemies
and from all who hate us.
72 He has been merciful to our ancestors
    by remembering his sacred covenant—
73 the covenant he swore with an oath
    to our ancestor Abraham.
74 We have been rescued from our enemies
so we can serve God without fear,
75 in holiness and righteousness
for as long as we live.

76 “And you, my little son,
will be called the prophet of the Most High,
because you will prepare the way for the Lord.
77 You will tell his people how to find salvation
    through forgiveness of their sins.
78 Because of God’s tender mercy,
the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
and to guide us to the path of peace.”

Song of Worship

4th Scripture:

It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. Isaiah had spoken of John when he said,

“He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming!
    Clear the road for him!
The valleys will be filled,
and the mountains and hills made level.
The curves will be straightened,
and the rough places made smooth.
And then all people will see
    the salvation sent from God.’”

Closing Song

Be people of peace.
Let peace live in your heart and share the peace of Christ with all you meet.
Share peace by acting out of compassion and not fear.
Share peace by listening to all sides of the story.
Share peace by praying for our world.
In this Advent season, we need to see, feel, and share peace.
As you go out into the wonder of God’s creations, share peace and hope with those you meet. Amen.
