Opening Music

1st Scripture

Psalm 25:1-10 (NLT) ; 詩 篇 25:1-10 (CUVS)

O Lord, I give my life to you.
I trust in you, my God!
Do not let me be disgraced,
or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.
No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,
but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.

Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love,
which you have shown from long ages past.
Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth.
Remember me in the light of your unfailing love,
for you are merciful, O Lord.

The Lord is good and does what is right;
he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
He leads the humble in doing right,
    teaching them his way.
10 The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness
all who keep his covenant and obey his demands.

Lighting the Candle of Hope

Reader 1:
Isaiah 9:2, 6-7, NIV – “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. […] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

Reader2:
As we gather today, we claim the gift of hope that is in Christ Jesus.
We are aware of the despair that is all around us.
We hear about it globally – famine, climate change, disease.
We know about it locally – racism, inequality, poverty.
And we experience it personally – depression, anxiety, broken relationships.

Reader1:
Into this darkness the light has come.
Into this hopelessness and despair came the gift of hope, Jesus Christ.
In the face of despair, we light a candle of hope…
(Light the candle in your Advent wreath)

Reader2:
May the light from this candle say to all that God’s hope is coming on earth as it already is in heaven. “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)

Reader1:
Friends, do not be afraid, do not despair, God’s hope has come! Let us reflect the gift of hope this Advent season.

2nd Scripture:

25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. 26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”

29 Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree. 30 When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near. 31 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.

34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, 35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”

30 a

34 你 们 要 谨 慎 , 恐 怕 因 贪 食 、 醉 酒 , 并 今 生 的 思 虑 累 住 你 们 的 心 , 那 日 子 就 如 同 网 罗 忽 然 临 到 你 们 ;

Prayer for our World

Our CBM prayer this week is from Bruno and Cathleen Soucy, CBM Field Staff in Latin America

“Heavenly Father, by your great love we come before you in prayer.

Oh Lord so many of our churches in Latin America and the Caribbean continue to lose their pastors to COVID-19. Even today we have learned of another dynamic pastor here in Guatemala who did not survive. Lord, the churches are suffering and people are drifting away. Many of the indigenous people do not believe there is a pandemic and act in ways that are potentially harmful to themselves and others. There is so much fear and unkindness. Lord, we are burdened by these losses and the impact on families, churches and communities.

Lord, as we learn of the suffering and challenges that people face worldwide, regardless of where they live – fires, floods, corruption and ineffective leaders, we confess our sadness and our fears. We can feel hopeless. Help us Lord to believe that what is happening today will not keep us from anticipating a better future. …”

Read the Soucy’s full prayer here. If you like, take time now to send your own praises, thanks and concerns to the Lord.

Worship Song

3rd Scripture

14 “The day will come, says the Lord, when I will do for Israel and Judah all the good things I have promised them.

15 “In those days and at that time
I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line.
He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
16 In that day Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
And this will be its name:
    ‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness.’

Song of Response

4th Scripture / Benediction:

11 May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. 12 And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. 13 May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.

12 又 愿 主 叫 你 们 彼 此 相 爱 的 心 , 并 爱 众 人 的 心 都 能 增 长 、 充 足 , 如 同 我 们 爱 你 们 一 样 ;
