July 18, 2021 – Outdoor Worship

This online worship service contains the Scripture readings and links to the songs we use in our in-person service. This week we are meeting in a park, so the format is quite different from usual. Our past online Sunday services are here.

Our in-person worship service starts at 10:30 am. This week there is no Sunday morning Connections Cafeon zoom, but it will continue next week. Check our Summer page to find out what is happening over the next few weeks.

Prayer for our World

Our CBM prayer this week is from John Chan, CBM’s Director of International Partnerships

“Dear Heavenly Father, you’re our strength, rock, fortress, and deliverer; in you, we take refuge.  In our distress, we called to You; we cried to our God for help. We are confronted daily by death, sickness, economic downturns, isolation and mental health challenges. Without you, we would be lost, but we’re thankful that you stoop down from your temple and you hear our voices; our cry came before you, into your ears. We pray today specifically for our partners who have suffered the greatest due to COVID. We pray for partners in India, in Andhra Pradesh, in Odisha, and in Nagaland who are ravaged by the pandemic.  …”

Scripture Reading:

Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT) ; 馬 太 福 音 6:19-21 (CUVS)

19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Reflection on the Reading:

Keeping in mind the context of these verses within the Sermon on the Mount, reflect on the following questions. You can do this individually or with others.

  1. What possessions do you really value at this moment in time? But what about the future?  In 5 years’ time, which of your possessions do you think will still hold the same importance to you? Would you have given the same answer before the pandemic?
  2. Beyond possessions, what is really important in your life that you hope will endure? What do you deem as truly valuable? What do you believe God deems as valuable?
  3. In scripture, our heart is seen as the center, the core of our being. What things might be vying for your heart?

Read the passage again, and imagine Jesus speaking directly to you. Sit with the passage in quietness for a few minute before you go on to the next questions.

  1. How do we lay up treasure in heaven?
  2. Is the treasure of God’s Kingdom only a future reality, or might we experience it in the present?

Spend some time praying about your thoughts on this topic.

Song of Response:

Victory in Jesus

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. ~ Ephesians 3:20–21
